My Guardian Angel

My angels want to be known.

I’ve written about them this past week. They want you to know that they are here and that they are active in my life. They don’t want you to think that they are only working through me and that I have a unique pipeline to a sacred conversation. I believe that they want to use my conversations as a way of empowering you to discover your own sacred angelic relationships. Over the next several posts I’ll share my relationships, how I discovered them and how you can discover and work with your angels. Let me share with you how I met my Guardian Angel and how she directs my life.

Some would say that angels are new age, wu-wu, spiritual fluff. I've been dismissed this way on several occassions. It doesn't bother me. I've been dismissed throughout my career as someone who is nothing more than wu-wu spiritual fluff. I've come to let people come to their own conclusions about who I am. I primarliy consider myself a mystic. The myticism opens a door to deeper spiritual experiences.

I don’t so much believe in Angels as I know that they are here. You can believe in Angels and still hold them at a distance. You can believe in angels in general, think that they work in the world, and respond to human needs, for me, Angels are more. Angels are personal. We each have them. They are here to guide and support our lives.

I first met my angels several years ago. I had read about angels, there are tons of great books about angels. My good friend and colleague Mitch Samu talked about his angels and how they guided his life. I had come to a point in my spiritual life where I wanted to discover my angels.

It was a simple thing to do. In the midst of a deep meditation I asked my Angels to reveal themselves. She emerged out of a divine mist. I realized that she had always been with me, and for my entire life she was my guardian. I call her, “she,” because this is how she has manifested herself to me. Some Angels appear in masculine form, still others might appear as asexual. I don’t actually believe that angels have sexuality, it’s simply how they manifest themselves to a particular individual.

My guardian angel is nameless. I’ve asked her if she has a name and all I receive is silence, so I call her, “GA”, for Guardian Angel. She accepts this as a simple way for us to communicate and to explain her presence I know that other guardian angels have given names to the people they guide, mine is nameless. It’s not that one angel is more important than another, it’s how they choose to reveal themselves.

My GA serves as a guide. She directs my visions. She inspires my work. I turn to her when I’m writing sermons, blogs, and journal posts. She often dictates what I’m to write about. When I’m working hard on a sermon and feel stuck, I back off and try to get in touch with her and ask for her insight. When I pray for people I can feel her holy light wrap a person in divine care. When I’m walking into a challenging situation I check in with her for guidance and insight. I ask that she awakens me to a sacred way of communicating with others.

My GA also directs my life. She doesn’t keep my from the accidents or tragedies of life, for I have had many of them, but she is there to comfort, provide solace, and direction in the wake of an accident. However at during life and death events she has made herself crystal clear. I have seen her throughout my life when my son Taylor has almost lost his life on several occasions. She also doesn’t keep me from making bad decisions, for I have made plenty of them as well. But she does provide guidance after I make a terrible decision working to repair my life and the relationships that I might have damaged.

As I said, my GA guides my visions. She directed the visions that I had earlier in the week. She took me where I needed to go, showed me what I needed to see, was my companion, and interpreted what I experienced.  Not every vision is dramatic and earth shaking. This morning I was simply in her presence. She lifted me among a sacred mist and I was laid down, suspended in a flowing cloud. It was healing, soothing and refreshing. She was healing my soul preparing me for another day.

Some might say that my GA is nothing more than tapping into my “Higher Self.” This might be true, although for me this higher self exists outside of me and has a sacred and holy identity, which is a key concept. My GA is sacred and holy. She is connected to God. She is God’s messenger to me. Just as in the Biblical scriptures where angels are messengers from God, so my GA is God’s messenger to me. This isn’t to say that I don’t have a direct connection to God, I do. At any moment I can be immersed in the divine presence. The difference is that my GA puts God’s presence into visions and words. She provides a shape and meaning to God’s presence that I might miss other wise.

I also have other angels that guide me, my Lisa’s. I’ll talk about them in another post at a later time.

I know that each of us have Guardian Angels. Again, it transcends belief, I know. I have spent enough time with my Angels, listening and talking with others about  times when they have met angels that I know that they exist. But more than just existing, I know that they are personal. Each of us have a GA. At times my angelic awareness allows me to see other peoples Angels as well. You can discover your Guardian Angel in simple ways. I’ll share how to do this in a later post as well.

I invite you to respond to this blog on FB and share your experience with angels. I’d like to show people how prevalent angels are. You can write, “I’ve met one,” or you can go into more detail.

I’ve started writing about my angels because they have directed me to. I believe they want to say something to us, to begin a conversation. So I will continue to write and share, to allow them to speak through me so that we can all discover this sacred dimension of our own lives.
