Sermon Summary, Father's Day, Joseph and Jesus - Father and Son

In this Father’s Day sermon, I find deep inspiration in reflecting on Joseph, the father of Jesus, as portrayed in Matthew 1:18-25. Joseph’s role as a father resonates with me personally, having been blessed with positive father figures in my life. Today is a celebration, but I also recognize the complexity of emotions this day can bring, particularly for those who have experienced pain related to their own fathers. I extend a gentle reminder to be kind to oneself on this day. I also am mindful of women who serve as father figures for their children. I celebrate woman, as a well as men in the responsibility to raise our children.

Joseph’s character exemplifies qualities I believe we need to embody as fathers and grandfathers. He lived in Nazareth, likely a humble carpenter, yet his faithfulness and compassion are what set him apart. His decision to quietly divorce Mary upon discovering her pregnancy, despite societal expectations, shows his depth of compassion and commitment to righteousness beyond mere legalism.

Joseph’s openness to divine guidance through dreams is particularly striking. His willingness to listen and act upon these messages, such as fleeing to Egypt to protect Jesus from King Herod’s wrath, speaks to a profound trust in God’s leading. It challenges us to consider how we can be more attuned to spiritual guidance in our parenting journey, guiding our children to discern their own paths and purposes in life.

As I reflect on Joseph’s role in shaping Jesus’ upbringing, I am moved by the thought of the conversations they might have had. Joseph’s teachings and example undoubtedly influenced Jesus’ understanding of his divine mission. Similarly, we are called to instill faith, compassion, and a sense of purpose in our own children, preparing them to embrace their unique identities and roles in the world.

Ultimately, I’m reminded of the sacred responsibility we fathers and father figures carry. Joseph’s nurturing and guidance of Jesus, treating him as one destined for greatness, challenges us to view our children in the same light. As we honor Joseph on this day, I encouraged all father figures to raise their children with love, compassion, and a deep sense of purpose, fostering an environment where they can grow into their fullest potential.
