The Morning Jukebox

I love waking up every morning. In part because it’s a new day and I’m curious about just what’s going to happen. But what I enjoy when I wake up is listening to the song running through my head.

I call it my morning jukebox. For some reason, and somehow, my brain selects a song that I hum when I wake up.

I think in part it’s because I love music. As most of you know, I love Western Music – not Country Western- but Western. Western music goes as far back as the 1860’s and the cowboys on the cattle drives. It spans all the way up to some of the most contemporary poets, writers, and singers performing today. Don’t start me talking about Western Music, I'm a western nerd. I can bore you to tears about the history. But the point is I surround myself with music.

I also play and practice several musical instruments during the day. Early mornings and late evenings I’m playing the guitar, banjo, harmonica, or flute. There is always a song surrounding me.

I talked with Sara Rex, the Minister of Music and Worship here at CUC. She said she has the same thing; she always has a song in her head from the moment she wakes up.  She has a morning jukebox. Right now, sitting in my office I hear Sarah signing down the hall in her office. It’s what makes working here fun, Sarah is our work jukebox.

Tis the season for music! For me, the best part of the holiday season is the music! There is so much music, so many different types of music in the holiday season – even Rap! If you google “Rap Christmas Music” there’s some great songs that come up on YouTube. Sacred music, secular music, Broadway, folk, Country Western, even Cowboy Western has Christmas music – There’s something for everyone. I have a Spotify song list of over forty-eight hours of Cowboy Christmas music.

Hopefully you know about Spotify and Apple Music. If not, go research them out. Through these platforms you have access to hundreds of thousands of songs, CD’s and Mp3’s. There’s also Pandora if you like a radio station platform. Here in Denver KOZY 101 plays non-stop Christmas music during December.

There’s no excuse to not sing during Christmas! I know here at Columbine this Advent we’re going to be singing carols all month.

Teach Christmas songs to your kids, help them develop the joy of Christmas music.

I hope you have a morning jukebox. It’s a great way to start the day. If you do, let me know what plays in your head.

Here’s to singing your brains out this Christmas season!
